Supporting Clients to Stay with Sensation and Emotion
Developing practical skills for when a client cannot stay with what they feel, name what is happening, or remain connected to you.
New Cohort Starting 6th October 2026
If you already invite people to slow down or notice their bodies, you will know there are times when the invitation lands with uncertainty. You might ask, “What do you notice in your body right now?” and the person looks thoughtful, pauses, and says, “I’m not sure.” They search for an answer rather than feel for one. You see them thinking about their body rather than sensing it.
With some people, the difficulty lies in language. They sense that something is happening but cannot describe it. They may say, “There’s something there,” and then feel stuck. You can feel the uncertainty, confusion or searching more than the words.
Others begin to describe what they feel and then move away from it. They touch on something meaningful and the attention changes. They start explaining the feeling instead of staying with it. The conversation carries on, and both people are often left with a faint sense of something unfinished.
This training was developed for practitioners who recognise these moments and want more skill in helping someone move through them – not by pushing, but by creating conditions where connection becomes possible.
Core Areas of Practice
We explore:
- What to do when a client searches for an answer instead of feeling for one
- How to help someone stay with sensation when they start to move away from it
- How to support a client to find language for experience that feels hard to describe
- How to work with the moment a client touches something meaningful and then explains it away
- How pacing, tone and your own steadiness affect what becomes possible in the room
- How to know when to slow down, when to wait, and when to offer language
These areas guide the teaching, demonstrations, and structured practice. The aim is to deepen practical skill so it becomes more available and reliable in real clinical situations.
Training Structure and Learning Approach
In the weeks between, participants meet in practice and study groups. These sessions offer guided opportunities to try out the skills introduced in the live teaching, work with structured experiments together, and speak about what they noticed in the process. They also strengthen your ability to support clients in this work, as you practice staying with sensation and emotion in your own experience.
Across the training, participants will:
- Engage with teaching that supports clinical decision making
- Observe demonstrations with structured reflection
- Take part in paired or small group practice sessions
Between meetings, participants take part in guided practice for one to two hours per week. They will have access to an online learning platform with prompts and instructions for this work. The experiments give you direct, felt experience of what you are inviting clients into.
Learning Environment: The Awareness Lab
The training is supported by The Awareness Lab, an online learning environment that holds the material and the ongoing connection between sessions. Participants have access to:
- Prompts and instructions for guided practice
- Session recordings
- Workbook activities and downloadable resources
- A space to ask questions when they come up
- Community interaction with others in the cohort
- Opportunities to stay connected between live meetings
The Awareness Lab provides a consistent place to return to between meetings, helping the learning stay active and integrated between sessions.
Is this for You?
It may appeal if you would like embodied work to feel more natural and integrated in your practice, rather than something separate or occasional. The training builds practical skill for the moments when an invitation into the body doesn’t quite land, when the person searches, disconnects, or struggles to find words or stay with sensation.

GROUP SIZE
PAYMENT
- One full payment of £375
- Three monthly instalments of £125
- Five monthly instalments of £75
As the group is limited in size, a full commitment to all meetings is important. The continuity of attendance helps the learning settle and gives the group a dependable rhythm.
The fee reflects the teaching, guided practice, and ongoing support built into the training, including access to The Awareness Lab and biweekly practice and study groups. It aims to balance sustainability with making the programme accessible to practitioners who want to develop these skills.
FAQ
Do I need prior experience with somatic or body-based approaches?
It helps if you are interested in embodied and relational work. You do not need formal training in a specific modality. The training supports practitioners who want more skill and confidence in bringing body awareness into their existing practice.
Is this a personal therapy space?
This is a professional training. Your own responses will come into view at times, but the focus is on your clinical work rather than personal therapy.
How much weekly time should I allow?
Allow around three hours for the live sessions every other week, plus a 90-minute practice and study group in the in-between weeks. Guided practice usually takes one to two hours each week and is supported with prompts and resources on The Awareness Lab.
What if I miss a session?
This training is experiential and relies on attendance and participation. Being present allows the learning to develop and helps keep the group grounded and connected. We ask for around 90 percent attendance, which usually means no more than one live session and one practice group missed. If you do need to miss a session, you will have access to the recorded teaching elements and the relevant material through The Awareness Lab.
Will the sessions be recorded?
Parts of the live sessions will be recorded and made available through The Awareness Lab. Teaching and demonstrations are usually included. Small group work and live practice are not recorded to support confidentiality and allow people to be fully involved. Recordings support learning rather than replace attendance.
How will I access the sessions and materials?
Once registered, you will receive Zoom links and calendar invitations for all live sessions and practice groups. The Awareness Lab hosts all of the learning materials and provides reminders, recordings, and resources as the training progresses. It gives you a clear place to return to throughout the training.
Will this count toward CPD?
A letter of attendance can be provided for your CPD records.
